Differences on the field

I never thought that football could be called soccer. Another unexpected shock, haha. I am coming from a family where football (soccer) is almost as important as faith. Because of that, I feel somewhat uncomfortable when I have to say the word soccer. But for the sake of this blog, I will call football soccer. In this blog, I will include my feelings about sports culture here in the United States and Slovakia.

TQL Stadium, Cincinnati, Ohio

One of my first memories from my childhood is playing soccer with my dad, later with my sister and my brother. Soccer was, and still is, an activity that connects my family. There was no conflict or bad mood that a soccer game or achievement could not resolve. Even my grandparents would play with us. In Slovakia, almost everyone who can stand and walk plays soccer. Soccer is a true part of not only my family's culture but Slovakia's culture as well. Because of that, my siblings continue to play in the United States, as well.

In the United States, there are many more sports that connect people. Football, basketball, baseball, ice hockey,..As much as the Slovak and American cultures differ, love for sports stays the same. Interpretations of the passion for sport are a bit different. While Americans are amazing with marketing, thanks to which each game has a personality.

I have been to three ice hockey games, two AHL and one NHL. That was a true experience. Before the game started, retired players were honored, the hymn was sung and a light show. Throughout the game, there were games and gifts for the fans. There was not one quiet moment. One thing that I did not like about it was that there was nothing naturally coming from the fans. Every interaction was planned and performed by the staff.

Columbus Blue Jackets

I have also been to two baseball games, MLB. Honestly, I have never seen anything more boring. The game itself was very slow and stodgy. The only interesting thing about the game was the ketchup and mustard race. Where people dressed as sauces and ran around the field.

Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio

In Slovakia, no staff takes care of the entertainment of the fans. Usually, each team has its own fan club that comes to every game and creates a fun atmosphere that supports the players. There are huge posters, drums, songs,...Great examples of these fan clubs are Ultras Spartak and Ultras SK Slovan.

What are your favorite sports and sports clubs? Do you feel like sport is important in your life?
